Math and Number Awareness

As the children play with mathematical materials such as unit blocks, unifix cubes, pegs or peg boards they are absorbing mathematical information. They create complex patterns, build intricately balanced and symmetrical structures and solve multiple step problems. The teachers provide the children with mathematical language to identify shapes, count out loud, talk about position of objects, and use descriptive words like more and less. We encourage children to show and tell us what they are doing. It is through their interactions and interest in materials that mathematical connections are made and absorbed.
